How to Make a Japanese Rock and Water Garden

Low Maintenance Japanese Gardens
Japanese gardens simply present nature in the most fundamental form, create an allure unmatched. And moreover, these aesthetically superior lawns feature under the category of low maintenance gardens. If this and the visual appeal of the beautiful Japanese Gardens has prompted you to have one of your own, the details below should be of interest.

Japanese Garden Designs / Styles
Japanese Gardens are basically lawns designed in Japanese style. By Japanese style or the Japanese garden designs, the key indication is towards the inclusion of few special elements like water, rocks, etc. In fact it is based upon these elements that the gardens get their identification. You can have your own Japanese rock gardens or Japanese koi water gardens or Japanese water gardens and so on. The elements are basically included in the design for purpose of special depictions. Japanese rock gardens for instance would exhibit rare rocks, symbolizing important cultural references. Likewise the Japanese koi water gardens, Japanese koi would be the key attraction. In addition to the stated element feature, there are a variety of distinct, deliberate inclusions. For example the garden might have intended uneven spaces, so that the observers can have a better view. The idea is to take away from the stressful schedules, closer to the much beautiful natural surroundings, recreated in the Japanese Gardens.

In addition to the stated element driven style, Japanese gardens have three other key design forms viz., Karesansui Gardens, Tsukiyama Gardens and Chaniwa Gardens. Chaniwa Gardens are basically tea houses, styled as a hut and thus a venue for holding tea ceremonies. Karesansui Gardens on the other hand are an extension of Zen Buddhism. These are basically dry landscape gardens. Tsukiyama Gardens pick landscapes from Japan and China and are structured to render a more spacious look to the otherwise normally sized lawn area.

Creating the Japanese Gardens
Japanese gardens are basically low maintenance gardens i.e. they do not seek regular attention. While creating the garden, keep the following pointers in forefront and the process would be easier:

  • Include the water element: Japanese water gardens bring life with them and if you are looking to create one of the aesthetically superior Japanese gardens, it would not really be an enchanting idea to ignore the water part. For low maintenance gardens, the water element can be in form of static pool or even a large bowl. Fountains, water stream, etc., can all be considered.

  • Be selective with the ornaments: the various ornaments of Japanese gardens have a significance of their own. So do not just pick anything and place it in the lawn. Be careful with the selection and suit your style while accessorising the low maintenance gardens.

  • Special stages: A Japanese garden would most definitely have those attractive focal points; the same could be easily created with pebbles. This would also save maintenance time and effort. Dipping bowl, lantern, etc., are other options here.

  • The design should be in line with the size. A Japanese garden can well be conceptualized in small space, but then it is important to design such that only the basic elements are covered.

  • Japanese plants offer abundant choice in the planting category. You can opt for bamboo fencing and tress, plants and shrubs all together. There are no restrictions to creativity with Japanese gardens. Bordering, creating focal points, filling in spaces, strategic placements, rendering elevated designs and all such purposes can be taken care of during the planting stage.
